About Us.
The Dunsborough Toy Library is a volunteer-run, non-profit organisation, which relies on its members to staff the toy library. A volunteer committee coordinates the DTL, with roles including Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, Grants, Toy Purchasing and Promotion/Marketing.
Why are toy libraries important?
Play
Play is how children learn and making it fun is nature's way of ensuring children get lots of practice. The games children play are directly linked to the needs of the growing body and mind. If play is a child's work then they must have the tools for their trade. Toys are tools that help a child enjoy play.
Saving Money
The Dunsborough Toy Library (DTL) is an example of the sharing economy, which relies on peer-to-peer networks to connect people. The main benefits of this model are:
Saving Money - A low annual membership fee allows members to borrow from a large range of toys for a two-week period.
Sustainability
Sustainability - The DTL has a range of good quality toys and negates the need for parents to continuously buy low quality, cheaply made toys that break, or that children get bored with, that inevitably end up in landfill. The same toys are reused, borrowed and enjoyed by lots of children, which also reduces demand for consumption and the environmental impact of manufacturing new toys.
Community Connections
Building community connections - The DTL provides an important place for parents and children to meet and interact, learn about ages and stages of children's development, and a means for contributing to their local community.
